הוא התאושש, כבר פחדתי, הוא רץ לעברי, שלף מקל טרניטיום שחור,
חזק, כואב, והניף, פגע, והעיף אותי שלושה קילומטרים אחורה.
עכשיו כבר הייתי עצבני, הוא לכלך אותי, והכתים אותי בדם. קמתי,
שלפתי את החרב שלי ועוד סכין קטן, והחזרתי אותם. הוא ציפה לזה.

הבור שחפר לפני שנתיים עדיין היה שם. ואין סיבה שלא. "בורים לא
נעלמים סתם כך", חשב לעצמו. חיוך קטן פתאום עלה בזוית פיו.
מאיפה או מאיזו סיבה - הוא לא ידע להסביר. רק שזה הרגיש ממש
טוב.

התעטפתי בגלימתי הירוקה והחמה פעם נוספת והתחלתי לצעוד במורד
הגבעה. ידעתי מה מצפים ממני ולא התכוונתי לאכזב. חישלתי את
עצמי לעתיד לבוא ופניתי בעיקול האחרון במורד. לעיניי נגלו
עשרות שורות של חיילים - עומדים זקופים, חרבותיהם בידם ומגניהם
לצדם.
