I gaze upon her when the while
Daydreams are drifted to far an isle;
There, they gather thick a haze,
And stream the circled seas around
Its wildish, jungle-crafted maze.
And midst the glow of its cheery sand,
Slumbered she upon its bosom, pondered,
Its golden grains bestow a throne by hand
To her, the sleep-crippled marvel
Upon which I had dizzily then wondered!
Sunbeam yet has dare not burn such skin
In suntanned perfection since her first birth
Behold the view there my thoughts now lean-
A morn-a puzzle- made from leaf-green fragments
Of old vegetation rejoiced-A sight of decent mirth!
Though distant yonder peculiarity affirms
Its uncommon beauty-Its embodiment confirms-
When I gaze upon that god's diamonded offering-
Thus daydreams adrift to clearer, real a view;
.The isle-a wrecked visage, her sprite-still a suffering |
