He drove his car to her driveway
His heart was pounding faster
He knew that he was headed
Into a disaster
With trembling feet
He came to the door
Everything was the same
Yet, so different than before
And there she was standing
He could tell right then
From the look in her eyes
It was over before it even began
This time it's for real
There was no use to hide
"Happy birthday to me" he thought
As he stepped inside

They went to her room
And sat on the bed
She seemed to look older
Her eyes looked so sad
She did most of the talking
There was not much to say
She said she needed a break
That was usually her way
He tried to sound brave
And said he will give her some space
Although he came every two weeks
And went back to his base
So with tears in their eyes
They could no longer keep
They spent their last night together
Before falling asleep

When he awoke the next day
It was already time to go
So he got out of the bed
Covered with morning glow
He picked up his things
And stood by the bed
He watched her sleeping
She seemed to be glad
He told her he loved her
But she didn't hear
As he walked out the door
And then disappeared
He walked to his car
And although he didn't know it then
It was the last time that they talked
And he never saw her again
