For you are as the ocean vast and deep,
And like to it, once peaceful and once restless;
And treasures great you under water keep
For those who dive into your mazes endless.
From secret isles, where unknown folks reside,
To schools of fish of forms and colors nameless,
By roads unmapped which in the darkness hide
You walk at will, respectful, eager, fearless.
Well-versed by storms and suns of many years,
Your wisdom boundless everything embraces;
Your sights can lead to awe, to zest, to tears
Yet still you are yourself by different faces.
All vain are my attempts to stem your surge.
Whatever dam I set - the current breaches,
And I am inundated by the urge
Of waves which, one by one, crash on my beaches.
Severe and harsh, they solemnly command
To take on road - to you, to you, to travel
With you from sea to sky, from sky to land
And by your side their riddles to unravel.
And this one grace alone from you I pray:
To let me answer to your call compelling,
And follow your on-going, winding way,
Where it may lead me there is no foretelling.
To wander in your realms from day to day,
To dedicate myself, to be your squire;
For your voice in my bones I cannot stay
And in my heart it is a burning fire.
My kith and kin behind me I must leave,
Have no own soil, no home, to none be married;
And while I may, unto the journey cleave,
To dwell along the road, and there be buried.
And should a death untimely me befall
And put a dire end of the adventure,
Then I accept that this may be the toll
On him who chose to the unknown to venture.
Until the line where sky unites with ground,
Where space and time are brought to meet their limit;
And there they say the well of truth is found
And one can see one's own true image in it.
Another planet captured by your force,
Compelled to orbit you with all submission;
I bask in your light rays that reach my course,
And tide when I come nearest your position. |
