The mark of craftsmanship is an underlying
self-consciousness that reveals itself in the redrafting of
whatever it is over and over again.

A long time after everyone around tells you that what you
have in your hands is good, you still take it apart and
reassemble it, twist it over and test it, torture it and
tease it.

It's of course yourself that you aren't quite pleased with.
I don't believe artisans and artists who say they feel good
about themselves. It's possible that the fact that I find
myself writing and rewriting, means that this is my calling.


What a pompous word - "calling". God, I've only written
maybe twenty paragraphs of which I'm only really pleased
with the words I wrote for some friend's music.

My writing isn't free standing.
