It was one of those nights
Where the rain made the light
Hazy and warm like New York can be
When you walk with me.
We were alone here,
With everybody else
Stretching out our species
As far as we could, our self.
You come to this city
the giant temple
You light the traffic lights
As you walk by
Chant silently
Watching your thoughts
Ride the subway
Stop at a deli to catch their breath.
This place will strip you
Of your ego
And everything else
As you try to catch up
Watch your days
Go up in smoke
Like the heat from the
Holes in the ground when you look down
I just walked passed you
Did you hear me?
Chanting your name
Trying to tame
my heart
That beats beats beats
Long and deep, like the city.
