גיא בן-הינום / Tel Aviv, May 2001 |
The mornning paper has the same headlines every day, "2 palestinians were killed and one baby heavily injured", next to it in bold letters, "Sharon sends hes griefs to the family", the line under has the name of another Arab village where Israeli soldiers responded fire to. After that i just get in the car and drive to school - no bombs in the way, no houses surronded by barbed wire and 20 maniacs that shoot everything they can - just another normal day. The only difference is a few more soldiers and cops on the streets, more military police stopping cars which they find suspected. After school on the way back I cannot help my self from stopping for a quick video game at the famous Dizingof Center. The streets around are full of people, the two violin players are still playing and the only diffarence is the big tree with the names of the people who died while crossing the street by a suicidel terrorist who exploded in a bus - But the eyes are used to big trees with name in this part of the world. After the game I get back on a bus, num. 5, it won the "bus num. which was bombed the most" contest.. my watch announces the full hour and the bus driver turns the radio up to hear the news, "Good afternoon this is 88 fm and these are the 3 o'clock news. Rockets were fired at the Gila mountain in Jerusalem - Israeli forces responded fire. The 3 young men from Rishon Letsion that were arrested for raping a 17 year old girl from Lod will see a judge that will decide their sentence...." The situation in Tel Aviv is very tensed - yet stable, although the random bombs which explode in the big cities like Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Petach Tikva, Ra'anana the massive amount of armed forces who are searching every inch of this country for terrorists are doing a very good job in making the Hizba'la work hard. Most of the war is going on around the country close to the border (which is probebly the most un-definable subject in this country...), most people are busy with other important issues like the recruitment of the religious people, the heavy financial problems of the HiTec in Israel and the bad horrible hot sunny day that was yesterday. But one is for sure - If you are looking for a nice discussion about the situation, a demonstration against something or just people shouting and screaming at each other blaming the other for voting for the wrong prime minister you will have no problem finding what ever you want in every city in Israel. This concludes my report about life in tel aviv, may 2001. I'de like to add a personal note - life here may seem like a war zone, but the amonut of love and kindness you can find from the people, the feeling of brotherhood that is in every street, if you just take away the Israeli nature of shouting, spitting, stealing the sinks from hotels in Greece and just being nasty - when times come in which this country needs to defend itself - it's just so nice to walk down the street... ( just check for bags in corners and suspicious objects...) |
