Introduction
Blue cactus fish were once abundant across seas and coasts of tropical
waters. They underwent massive declines throughout the twentieth century,
driven primarily by harvest of eggs and adult prickles for trade.
According to scientists, more than 1.5 million blue cactus fish existed on
the earth 100 years ago.
However, recent estimates state that only one (1) blue cactus fish still
exists today!.

Recovery and restoration
The blue cactus fish has no recovery plan and the IUCN (the World
Cnservasion Union) scientists claim that if nothing will be done the blue
cactus fish is doomed.
IUCN lists blue cactus fish as "critically endangered".

Distribution and biology
Blue cactus fish (percina cactii) were widely distributed in tropical
waters and nested in more than 60 countries. Today, blue cactus fish are
rare throughout all od their range, and population declines have been
documented for all ocean basins.
After hatching, small cactus fish spend thir first years of life by the
deep currents of the open ocean. They then move to near-shore waters, reef
habitats and areas with hard, sandy bottoms. Cactus fish are omnivorous,
using their prickles for extracting sponges, invertebrates and aglae from
crevices in reefs or rocks.
Adults may reach some 90cm and may weigh as much as 8Kg.
