Everyone took out their pencils and started writing.
"Don't forget to write your name on top", Mr. Ross said.
For some reason I have a feeling I forgot to bring
something... Oh well...
So lets see... First question:
What are the eight "Arts"?
An easy question, of course, the answer would be: Fire,
Water, Earth, Air, Healing, Nature, Illusion and Poison.
Now to circle the correct answer.
Hmm, where's my pencil? Damn it! I knew I forgot to bring
something!
"Hmm, Mr. Ross?" I was so scared I almost whispered it...
"Yes, Mr. Zamaka, what is it?" Mr. Ross said with an upset
look on his face.
"I... I forgot to bring a pencil, Sir", I think I'm about to
faint.
Lucky for me, Mr. Ross liked me... I was one of the few
students who actually listened in his class and asked
questions.
"Here you go, Mr. Zamaka, you can have mine. Just don't
forget to return it to me at the end of the exam."
Mr. Ross walked to my desk and gave me his pencil.
Phew, that was definitely a scary moment... For a minute
there I thought that I would have to take the exam again or
something like that.
I finished the written exam pretty fast, took me only 117
minutes.
I waited in the hallway for Joe to come out, I'm sure it
went great for him too.
About five minutes after I finished, Joe came out.
"So how did it go Drop? Took you longer than usual..."
Joe looked at me with an expression that very clearly says:
"Fuck you", and said:
"Maybe it took me a little longer then usual but don't worry
Crispy, I'll get a better score then you will..."
"Yeah, right..." I said with a teasing smile on my face.
Joe looked at me and said: "You are really annoying, you
know that? You always finish the tests before I do and
nevertheless always get a better score then me..."
Just when I thought of something to say I heard a voice from
behind me: "Mr. Zamaka!" I instantly recognized Mr. Ross's
voice.
I turned back; my heart is beating like crazy... Mr. Ross is
standing there with a grim look on his face. I can hardly
speak, somehow I manage to open my mouth and say: "Yes Mr.
Ross?"
"You forgot to give me back my pencil boy..."
I can finally breath again... I smiled a little, searched my
pockets for the pencil and gave it to Mr. Ross.
"I'm really sorry, I totally forgot" I said.
"Don't worry, pressure can do weird things to us... Just
relax a little."
He took the pencil and entered the class again.
"Joe! Hiro!" I heard a girl's voice calling from the end of
the hallway.
It was Nina.
Nina is also one of my best friends, she moved to our class
in the ninth grade and since then she, Joe and me are good
friends.
Nina started running towards us and her long blond hair
scattered as she was running. She is smaller then Joe and I,
pretty skinny and has blue eyes.
On her back she carries her favorite weapon, the spear,
which is about as tall as she is...
"Hey guys! So how did it go?"
Now that I think of it, I didn't see Nina in our class
today...
"It went pretty good" Joe and I said at the same time.
"Where have you been? I didn't see you in class" I curiously
asked.
"Oh, that... I was late to the exam today so Ms. Tang who
noticed me running to my class said that I could do the test
in her class instead of walking late into mine. She is such
a nice person! Who would have thought that a Poison skills
teacher would be so nice..."
"Of course she was nice, you are her favorite student, and
no wonder! I've never seen anyone as good as you with poison
skills..." Joe said.
"Thanks a lot Joe, when does the practical exam starts?"
"Wait, you didn't tell us how did you do in the test yet" I
said.
"Oh, it went really good Hiro! I think I'll get a good score
on this one!" Nina enthusiastically answered.
Nina is always so energetic... I don't know how she got any
power left after this annoying and long exam.
"Cool, now just the practical exam left... So when is it
Drop?" I asked Joe.
"Hmm... The theoretical exam finishes in nineteen minutes,
after that there's a thirty minutes brake and then everyone
needs to gather in the backyard."
Hmm... I'm really hungry...
"Good, then there's still time to go grab a bite... I'm
fantasying on the cafeteria's hotdog for hours..."
Joe and Nina looked at me as if I just landed from Mars.
Nina started talking first: "How can you eat in such an
early hour?! Not mentioning the practical exam that we need
to take soon."
I smiled and said: "Well, you know me, I can always eat...
Besides, the food will sink until the practical exam starts;
its only one hotdog..."
"You're crazy, Crispy... But that shouldn't surprise me
after I know you for so many years." Joe apathetically
said.
"How can you say that?! He won't feel good in the exam if he
eats now!" Nina yelled at Joe.
"Hey, Hiro does what he wants anyway. No matter what you'll
say to him, he won't change his mind..." Joe calmly replied
to Nina.
"Fine... But remember what I said Hiro! Don't you blame me
if you fail the exams because your stomach hurt..." Nina
said. You could still hear the restlessness in her voice.
I walked down the hallway towards the cafeteria and on the
way I saw some of the students who were still taking the
written exam.
About half the students already finished and you could hear
them talking to each other and trying to check if they
answered the same way.
A girl from my opposite class is crying, don't know her,
just recognize her as one of my fellow students.
I guess some people just don't cut out to be an "Art"
user... It can be quite a disappointment to find out that
after you wear yourself out and study for twelve years, you
don't fit to use the "Arts".
Joe and Nina looked at the girl and continued walking beside
me; guess they don't know her either...
"Poor girl..." Nina quietly said.
"Yup, but that's life, unfair..." Joe said.
I didn't say anything from the simple reason that I don't
have anything to say, Joe pretty much said what I think.
Life's unfair and you can't do shit about it, just have to
accept it and deal with it in some way or another.
When I got to the cafeteria I've noticed that there's no one
in line; a rare sight indeed.
I went to the seller and asked for a hotdog; she looked at
me with disbelieving look on her face like she thinks I'm
joking her.
"One hotdog please" I repeated myself just to make sure that
she knows I'm serious.
"Hmm..." She said with a hazy expression.
Then, suddenly like waking up from a dream she said: "One
hotdog, coming right up!"
I paid and politely greeted her for goodbye.
Nina, Joe and I walked outside the building into the
backyard and sat on one of the benches that were there.
Some people already started to gather in here, most of them
students who are taking the exam; some younger students just
came to try and take a glimpse of what will happen before
their next lesson. Among the people, there were also
teachers and the Zao's exam comity that readied themselves
for the upcoming exam.
I finished the hotdog in five minutes and to pass the time,
Nina, Joe and me talked about what will be the exam this
year.
"I've heard that last year they just asked the students to
show three of their best skills, a totally easy exam..." I
said.
"My father told me that his exam was to complete five tasks
that the comity asked in any way he wanted. But that was
just the first part of the exam; the second part was to
perform ten skills that the comity chose, one from each
"Art" and another two that he wanted." Nina excitedly told
us.
Joe joined to the conversation: "My grandmother told me that
in her exam, the guy in charge of the comity fought each one
of the students in turn, and if he thought that you were
good enough then you passed... A weird exam; hope that it
won't be something like that for us."
"Sounds kindda cool actually... I wouldn't mind fighting
someone to see how good I am; they never let us fight in
school... No... "You can hurt each other" they always say;
how the hell are we supposed to get ready to fight real
people if they don't let us fight in here?" I said in an
irritated tune.
"Chill Crispy... You'll get to fight tons of times in the
"Art" school, that of course if you can pass the exam" Joe
said with a satisfied look on his face.
"I'll pass that exam all right! It's you I'm worried
about... All nice and sweet, can't even hurt a fly."
Nina interfered with our little quarrel: "Stop arguing you
two! Jesus, you guys will stay children forever..."
Joe and me looked at each other, nodded our heads and
answered at the same time: "Sorry, we don't believe in
Jesus..." and started to laugh.
"Very funny guys..." Nina said and looked at us with a
mocking expression.
Suddenly a voice echoed through the school speakers: "All
twelve grade students please report to the school backyard
for the practical exam; all other students are requested to
go back to their classes."
A horde of students started to come out from the main
building doors into the backyard.
"I didn't notice that the time passed so fast..." Joe said
while looking at his watch.
"Yeah; well, we better start finding our class, it seems
that we'll need to stand with it during the comity's
headmaster speech."
We all got up and started looking for our class; after we
found it and everyone got to the backyard, we stood in lines
before the improvised stage that was standing there and
waited for the comity's headmaster to start his speech.
After two or three minutes, a tall muscular man got up on
the stage and stood up in front of the microphone.
"Greetings dear soon-to-be "Art" academy students! My name
is Jack, I'm in charge of the exam comity and will be the
last to decide which one of you will pass the exam and which
will fail. To pass the exam there is one simple task:
fight!"
Whispers started to be heard among the crowd.
Joe looked at me with sad eyes and said: "Oh no, I hate
fights..."
"Ahem!" Jack coughed into the microphone so that the
whispers will stop.
"As I was saying. Between the eighty students that are here
there will be a tournament; if you lose, you are out... If
you win, you advance to the next battle. The top twenty
students will automatically pass the exam, of course that
there will probably be students that will fail to get to the
top twenty but will still perform a great show of talent and
will also pass the exam.
I hope it is needless to mention that if you failed the
written exam, you will not be able to pass this test even if
you pass the practical exam.
The fights will be randomly raffled which means that there
will be an equal chance for everyone.
The rules are the following:
One: killing a student will automatically considered a lost
and a trial according to the NY laws will be taken. Meaning
don't fuck up and kill someone.
Two: A match ends once the judge decides so, continuing with
the match after the judge ended it will resolve in
disqualification for both students.
Three: Attacking a judge is absolutely forbidden and again,
will resolve in the disqualification of the student and a
trial according to the NY laws if needed.
Four: A fight is over once one of the competitors is unable
to fight anymore; this will be decided by the judge.
These are the rules! If you still wish to participate in the
exam after hearing this you will need to sign that you agree
to the laws and that Zao organization has no responsibility
to any injury that you might receive during the exam.
If you wish to sign, please come one by one to the desk near
the stage."
Jack got off the stage and went to stand behind the desk.
In the meantime, whisperings were all over the place.
I looked at Nina and Joe and they looked stunned from Jack's
speech.
Personally I think that Jack is rather cool, although he
sounds like a military man.
"Hey, guys! Are you breathing alright?" I addressed Nina and
Joe who still seemed to have forgotten where they are.
"Quite an exam, ah Crispy? Guess you were right about the
super hard part, but you forgot to mention the GOD DAMN
CRAZY PART!" Joe looked a little disturbed while saying
these things.
"Cool down Joe, it will be alright. You're not gonna quit on
us now, are you?" Nina tried to cheer Joe up and to motivate
him.
Joe was always afraid of fighting, in all the time that I
knew him he never got into a fight even once... So I guess
that this tournament thing pretty shocked him.
"Quit?! Hell no! But I really don't know what I'm gonna
do... I probably suck at fighting..." Joe looked better now
but he started to get depressed.
"Don't worry mate, I don't call you Drop for nothing you
know... You got amazing water skills, you just need to
believe in yourself and I promise that it will be all right.
You can take ninety percent of the people here; trust me, I
know what I'm saying."
My words seemed to have cheer Joe up a little, he looked
less scared and finally stood upright again.
"Don't worry guys, I'll be ok; I'll do as much as I can and
if that won't be enough then I'm not cut to be an "Art" user
anyway." Joe calmly said.
"That's the spirit Joe!" Nina jumped in the air from
excitement and smiled again. I think that cheering Joe up
helped her to overcome her fears of battle also.
"Come on guys, lets go stand in line." I said.
By now, most people had already took themselves together and
stood in line... It seems that in the end no one will give
up the opportunity to take the exam.
We went to stand in line and didn't talk until my turn had
finally come.
I stood in front of the paper packed desk and Jack was
standing behind the desk and looked at me.
"Are you ready to sign these papers boy?!" Jack yelled in a
military style; I'm almost sure he was or is a military
personal.
"Ready as I'll ever be!"
I took the pen that was on the desk and started to read the
form; It said just as Jack explained to us before, in short,
I need to sign that the Zao organization will not be
responsible for anything that happens to me during the exam
and that I won't violate the rules. I signed the form in
four different places and gave it back to Jack.
"Thank you boy! You are free to do as you wish until
everyone will finish to sign." Jack proudly announced.
I took a few steps from the desk and waited for Joe and Nina
to finish signing their forms. Nina had no problem signing
it, Joe on the other hand took his time and read every last
word that was written on the form; but eventually he singed
it.
"Well guys, get ready to some ass-kicking"
I start to feel the adrenaline in my blood in each passing
moment. It is an exciting event and I can't wait to fight;
this is what I was dreaming of since I entered high
school...
"Don't get so enthusiastic Hiro, or you might find yourself
doing something rash..." Nina replied with a little stress
in her voice.
"I'll be just fine, I'm more worried about you two... But
I'm sure that we'll all pass in the end."
"Lets hope so" Both Nina and Joe said at the same time. They
started laughing.
This was the moment when the tension broke and the three of
us just started laughing and enjoying the time until the
start of the tournament.
"Everyone please stand in lines" It was Jack again on the
stage, everyone must have finished signing their forms.
Everyone stood in line as we were before Jack started to
talk for the first time.
I can feel the tension in the air, it's going to be an
exciting day...
"The first two students to fight are..."
