יובל ליובין
/ The day fire rained

One day fire rained from the sky. It wasn't the popular
apocalyptic version of great meteors hurdling from the sky,
destroying everything in their way in an explosive contact.
But rather drops of flame descending to earth, as if without
mass, and hitting the ground gently scorching its surface
with their heat. When this phenomena of occurred. I was
safely stowed in my own little apartment, gazing from my
window at the world being washed by this uncommon rain. The
drops fell as if strait from the sky in a direct angle,
allowing my window to be scorch free and giving me complete
visibility. So as to see my town standing there, in the line
between heaven and earth, as it did the day before, and the
one before that, unchanged for decades. It showed a complete
vision of it's past and yet so incomplete, for there has
never been this kind of rain in this town before.
The view from my apartment is amazing, and though I cannot
say that I am completely without fear, I can most certainly
tell that I am more in awe of this new discovered beauty.
The little drops of flame keep falling persistently, turning
our once gray street, complete with blue, yellow, red and
white markings, into different shades of scorched black. By
now the scorched streets are empty of people, but when the
rain began it was not so. When the streets where still
enjoying the variety of colors given to them, people where
jammed on sidewalks, all dressed nicely, mostly in black
since the rain began this morning and all were on their way
to work. There wasn't a single inch of sidewalk to be
spared, all were walking to their designated spots, all with
appointments and jobs and businesses to attend to. As one
saw this astonishing sight of humanity one could not believe
in the existence of a force so powerful that could drive
these creatures from their so organized lives. If I was
asked to describe this sight of them, which I saw as well
from my flat's window, to one who has never seen the hassle
of cities or humanity at all, I could only do so by
comparing them to beautiful ants, organized in a calculated
and logical society of complete discipline and readiness.
But this was not the view now. The view of beautiful
organization and logic was removed and replaced by that of
abnormality and chaos, both equally amazing. This view
however was not human; its canvass was but not the work
itself.
Before the rain, as the streets were still populated the sky
seemed the same as ever on this particular season. No
warning came as the first flaming drop hit. In a surprised
tone a yell could be heard, not to well but still enough to
draw the little attention needed for the day's first burn
victim to be noticed. But this attention didn't last very
long, for after the first drop followed the second and the
third until finally it showered fire. At first all kept in
their astonishment but not for long- Though the fire had no
weight it still had heat, and could still spread. Soon
people were abandoning of their burning clothes and running
indoors to flee from this danger. The streets, once filled
with life, now were left bare and exposed to this
unrelenting rain.
As this was happening I was as always on this particular
time, getting ready for the day. If I knew what this day was
to bring I never had changed clothe. But I never could
expect this surprise and so got changed, brushed my teeth
and all other things I do before I enter that society. I was
just at my window when it all happened, the amazed scream,
the gathering of the crowd, the intensification, and finally
the dispersing of the people and the now calm picture that
lies before me. A beautiful picture that can never be
captured in any form of art existing for the very reason
that it is what it is, unreal; The amazing skyscrapers, the
little neighborhoods, the apartment buildings, all standing
there with the same face as they wore yesterday, on that
rainless day. This once ordinary view now filled with
flames, drooping as if peacefully onto the ground, digging
deeper and deeper into the streets with their heat. Poring
against our buildings scorching their roofs, braking those
windows not hidden, and washing away that once familiar face
of our town.
Our town is a modern one, made mostly out of bricks and
cement, so our buildings don't catch easily on fire. I must
admit throughout the day there have been a few cases of
burning buildings left to be consumed by the fires since the
fire department had no way of helping. I am not here to
judge them for they have done nothing wrong, they were
trained to deal with all regular cases of fires and some
irregular ones but this was way beyond that, they were as
helpless as anyone and they knew it. But fortunately our
beautiful society knew how to make my building when it did
and I was quite safe, along with all others who resided in
this building or any like it. Knowing this I was left
careless and free to watch my view of this town in the rain.
Seating by the window I try to catch single drops of fire
before they fall to the ground and further scorch our once
colored streets. It is a hard job for the drops are many and
fall constantly with great speed. From this picture alone
one might think the rain was never to stop. But I knew
otherwise, it must stop, it will. Everything in this world
is not constant, there are no absolutes, all things passing
through our reality have a beginning, middle and an end, and
so must this.
