/ The Jump

Some things are worth dying for.
Some people are willing to die because of lost Love, others
because of Ideals, and yet others for Freedom.  Others, yet,
have no other reason to claim then sheer stupidity
.

"So what do you say?" asked Jimmy.
"Well, uh, let's do it," Greg answered hesitantly.
"You sure?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"Sure you're sure?"
"What the hell, let's go for it."
That's how they closed the door on that dilemma.  They
settled on the decision that they were favoring because they
didn't have any more patience to think about it, and they
couldn't just stand there forever discussing it.  A little
hasty and with a trace of doubt still lingering in them, but
some of history's most important decisions have been
concluded in the same way.  People have run for presidency
because they thought, "Why the hell not?"  Presidents have
been elected because a few thousand of the millions of
voters thought, "Who the hell cares?  They're all the same."
Presidents have approved military attacks because they were
tired and thought, "I'm pretty sure it's for the good of the
nation."
So they jumped.  Greg wearing his three-piece suit and
holding a briefcase in his hand.  'It was a symbol of the
average person's living,' he told whoever asked.  Jimmy
wearing his regular grunge-style: torn, bright-blue jeans, a
plain, white t-shirt cut around the neck, and a sweat-shirt
tied around his waist.
No, they didn't jump to the sound of some hot, new rock
song.  Nor did they jump from a bridge, tied to a rope, like
the rest of their bungy-jumping generation did, looking for
thrills.  They jumped from the ledge of one of the new
tinted-window skyscrapers built in the New-York area.  'A
symbol of the average person's work place,' Greg explained
to Jimmy when they were pondering where the site of the Jump
should be.  They jumped without a rope or anything.
Free-falling.
Falling to their deaths.
By choice.
They decided they were leading lives they didn't want to
live. In a world they didn't want to live in.  A world that
needed to be changed.  A world that they were changing at
that very moment, with the Jump.  A world that was shaped by
Eve eating an apple, Noah building an arc, Columbus
discovering a continent, Washington leading Europeans there,
the French revolting against their government, Bell
inventing the telephone, King having a dream and Hitler
hating Jews was going to be changed by Jimmy McNear and
Gregory Walls jumping from the top of a building.
It was going to.
But it wasn't.
The knowledge that the world wasn't going to be changed sunk
into Greg and Jimmy at the same moment.  That moment
occurred right between the forty-third and forty-second
floors.  At that moment both of them looked down towards the
ground.
They were having a good fall up to that moment.  Well, maybe
Greg would have enjoyed it a bit more if a bird that flew
overhead hadn't crapped on his suit.  But they were enjoying
the fresh air available at that height.  The scenery they
saw reflected on the tinted-windows of them falling with a
background of birds and buildings thrilled them.  They were
enjoying the feeling of pride flowing through them because
of the important message they were sending.  They were
feeling ecstasy.
That is, until they reached the top of the forty-second
floor.  Only then did they look down for the first time.
And only then did they see that history wasn't going to be
changed.  That society was going to pass their Jump
untouched.  And all because people had no respect for how
others want to express their opinions.
Jimmy and Greg looked down as if to say a final farewell to
the level of existence they knew so well: the ground.  But
they saw that no good-bye was needed, because they weren't
going anywhere.  What they saw below was a safety net held
by firemen, ready to cut their fall a little short.  After
recovering from his shock, Greg managed to let out a moment
before he hit the net, "I'm going to kill that Sammy.
Always has to ruin it."
After hitting the net they scampered off of it, stood up,
straightened their clothes and went their separate ways.
