A certain friend of mine has some aspects of his life which
I found myself envious of. Truly, his everyday life was a
source of great bitterness to me. Yet, we had a conversation
in which he told me how he thought he was "wasting his life"
and that nothing he did was enjoyable to him. Nothing,
including those same activities and aspects which I
listlessly envied; if that is the case, such that a man
which I envy, is himself unhappy - what real chance of
happiness does my life hold? Should I reach that revered
state of life which my friend was already in, is there
nothing more to expect but even more envy of those others
who have yet more than me in life? Is there no end to the
search for those coveted feelings of wholeness, of
completeness? Verily, if the pursuit of happiness is innate
to all human beings, can any man or woman ever find true
happiness? I, and everyone, actually, should be asking
ourselves what hope, what shimmering fraction of a chance
have we of leaving this cycle, to live happily ever after,
perhaps mourning the fate of our peers, who are still within
this cycle of never-ending anguish. It is all one can do to
try and improve one's self, so as to inhibit those feelings
of bitter contempt and malcontentedness.
